Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been given a slight boost to their chances of signing Kylian Mbappe. The 25-year-old faces an increasingly uncertain future at Paris Saint-Germain, with his contract at Les Parc des Princes set to expire at the end of the season.
Since the start of the New Year, clubs outside of France have been eligible to begin pre-contract talks with Mbappe over a free transfer in the summer. Now that the January transfer window has passed, the Parisians are in a race against time to extend his deal otherwise they could lose out on millions.
With the striker yet to sign an extension in the French capital, the Premier League has been mooted as a potential destination. However, the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs are expected to face tough competition from several top European clubs for Mbappe’s signature.
While there’s expected to be a long list of potential suitors, one club has already ruled themselves out of contention. Speaking to Catalonian outlet Esport3, Deco explained why it wouldn’t make sense for Barcelona to sign the France international.
The Catalan side’s sporting director said: “I don’t know what will happen with Mbappe. It would be a mistake to sell [Ronald] Araujo and Frenkie [de Jong].
“I would like to improve the squad and not make it worse. I think it would be worse for the team if Araujo and Frenkie left and Mbappe came.”
Despite this, Barcelona would be open to signing Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix on a permanent basis as they both continue to enjoy successful loan spells at the Camp Nou. On the Manchester City defender, Deco added: “He gave us balance in this full-back position. He can play on both sides. He was missing a player on the right and he also has quality.”
On the Atletico Madrid forward, the former Chelsea midfielder added: “[Ousmane] Dembele left due to the clause in his contract and Ansu [Fati] wanted to leave because he wanted minutes. Players were missing. He [Felix] came almost at zero cost, lowered his salary and decided to play some games.”
If Mbappe was to test himself in the English top flight, Bacary Sagna believes that Arsenal can offer the striker something which not many other clubs can. Speaking to Lord Ping, the former Gunners defender said: “I would love to see Kylian Mbappe playing for Arsenal!
“I think that transfer is almost impossible, but it would be crazy. Can you imagine Kylian Mbappe playing for Arsenal? I think he will be a very expensive transaction for Arsenal, but he would be such an amazing signing.
